In my recent post about having writer's block on this business blog, Rick said:
I'd love to see articles on goal setting...how does goal setting work for someone with ADD... For example, what are some of your best ideas on follow through?
What do you do to get yourself to stay on target even when the interest has dropped off?
Thanks, Rick! I think you've unstuck me. ;)
Rick asked a lot of good questions and I think I can tackle them in a series of posts, beginning with the idea that goal setting is a little different for adults with ADD.
One of the biggest problems that my business owner clients experience is that they unknowingly set themselves up for failure when they set their goals.
Because adults with ADD have a poor sense of time, we tend to think we can accomplish a lot more in a given period of time than we are actually capable of. So we set more goals than the average business owner, and get really down on ourselves when we're unable to follow through. Most of the time, however, no person - with or without ADD - could accomplish so much!
When setting a goal for your business, like increasing sales, staff, or market share, don't just think about what you'd like to see happen. Think about how you'll get there. In order for your goals to be effective, you have to have a plan of action. Simply writing down a wish or a dream won't get you anywhere. Action steps will.
So when you set goals for your business, be sure to include your plan of action in 3-5 steps. This will give you a better idea of how to accomplish your goal, and how long it will take. Then begin tackling the steps, one by one, until you reach your goal. Remember, the time it takes isn't as important as the fact that the goal actually gets accomplished. By continually referring to your action steps, you'll know that you're making progress.
Next, we'll look at more closely at following through on goals...
